Christmas Comes Early for Stockton Cancer Patients

December 19, 2017

STOCKTON, Calif. – December 19, 2017 – When Ashley Weinberg’s mother was battling small cell lung cancer in November of 2013, it took a lot to bring a smile to her face.

“Things started to get pretty bad and she just was so down. She became very negative, and for months the only emotion I saw on her face was sadness,” said Weinberg.

That was until a group of girls handed her a bag of gifts during treatment.

“This little girl donated baskets to cancer patients in lieu of getting anything for her 10th birthday, and my mother was one of the recipients of this generous child,” Weinberg said. “I remember the smile it brought to her face when she was in a very depleted state. Just to know there was a complete stranger who knows the struggles they are dealing with and that they took a small amount of time to think of her brought her a bit of joy.”

Weinberg’s mother eventually lost her battle with cancer, but she is hoping to give other patients who are still battling the disease that same gift. She and a group of friends put together baskets filled with items that are helpful for patients and their caregivers as they go through treatment.

“We received donations from so many different people. Each basket has gas cards, lotions, books, fleece blankets, lip balm, adult coloring books, and all sorts of other things that come in handy when you’re spending hours in treatment centers and doctor’s offices,” said Weinberg.

Weinberg will be handing the baskets out to patients on Friday, December 22 at St. Teresa’s Comprehensive Cancer Center, located at 4722 Quail Lakes Drive Suite B, Stockton, CA 95207.

“This is going to be a very special day for the physicians and staff, as well as the patients. Battling cancer is incredibly draining on patients and their caregivers. This is such a wonderful way of giving them a little mental boost, while we work to heal them physically,” said Dan Vongtama, M.D., Board Certified Radiation Oncologist with St. Teresa Comprehensive Cancer Center, an affiliate of 21st Century Oncology.
