STOCKTON, Calif. – Feb. 8, 2016 – St. Teresa Comprehensive Cancer Center in Stockton is proud to announce the addition of expanding technology in the fight against cancer. Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), also called Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy (SABR), is now available as part of its arsenal of cancer treatment options.
SBRT is a radiation therapy treatment that combines 3D imaging with multiple, highly-focused x-rays beamed at the tumor from different angles. Because of the pinpoint accuracy of this technology, SBRT can deliver higher doses of radiation in fewer treatment sessions, with less risk to surrounding healthy tissue. Treatment is delivered in one to five sessions compared to five to eight weeks with standard EBRT treatment.
“With the addition of Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy to our arsenal of treatment tools, we can provide this faster treatment option to patients with certain cancers,” said Dan Vongtama, M.D., Board Certified Radiation Oncologist with St. Teresa Comprehensive Cancer Center. “This allows us to bring a wider spectrum of radiation therapy treatment options, using advanced technology in Stockton to help our patients in San Joaquin County.”
SBRT is particularly effective against small, well-defined tumors in inoperable or surgically risky locations such as the liver or lung. This technology combines a high degree of accuracy with very high doses of radiation to precisely target the tumor while increasing the sparing of surrounding, healthy tissue.
